We are pleased to announce our next tasting event, an exploration of wines from renowned Sonoma producer Marimar Estate! Join us on Wednesday, May 14 at 6 p.m. as National Sales Manager Rob Stegall leads us through a lineup of five incredible wines.
In 1974, Marimar Torres moved from Barcelona, Spain to California’s coast. A member of the esteemed Torres family of Torres Family Winery, she bucked tradition by leaving home to forge her own winemaking path. She planted her first grapes in 1986, and her first bottles of Chardonnay were released in 1992. Today, the estate includes two vineyards: the Don Miguel Vineyard near Sebastopol, named after Marimar’s father, and the Doña Margarita Vineyard on the Sonoma Coast, named after her mother. These cool-climate sites are ideal for cultivating nuanced, expressive wines that reflect both place and precision. Marimar Estate is known for its elegant style, layered aromatics, and commitment to environmental stewardship.
In addition to producing wine, the estate offers a uniquely personal tasting experience that often includes Spanish hospitality and food pairings – an homage to Marimar’s Catalan roots. Now 80 years old, Marimar remains deeply involved in both the vineyard and winemaking operations. Her daughter Cristina has recently stepped into the role of General Manager, marking a historic first for the Torres family: the passing of the torch from mother to daughter rather than father to son
TASTING LINEUP:
2023 Acero Chardonnay
Fresh, floral aromas of white flowers and apple blossoms, with some citrus and stone fruits. On the palate it is savory and lively, with good acidity and refreshing minerality reminiscent of wet pebbles. Easy to drink and perfect with foods like tapas, seafood and lighter dishes. Acero is Spanish for steel and refers to the fact that the wine is unoaked.
2024 Albariño
Tropical aromas of ripe fruit like yellow nectarines, apricots and stone fruits, with notes of pineapple and mango. On the palate it is zesty and aromatic, with rich mouthfeel, clean and mineral – but also with a note of sunshine from California!
2019 Tempranillo
Classic nose reminiscent of ripe fruit, dark cherries, dried figs and black tea, beautifully integrated with the notes of anise and graphite contributed by the elegant oak. The palate is savory and mineral, with plush tannins and powerful structure that promise a very long life — 15 to 20 years for sure.
2021 Mas Cavalls Pinot Noir
Deep, engaging earthy nose of forest floor and mushrooms like porcini, with notes of orange peel and black fruits like dark cherries and wild berries. The palate is very fruit forward, chewy and savory, with notes of black tea and a nice framework of good acid. It will improve with age and smooth out the tannins; this wine will continue to develop for at least 10-15 years.
2021 Christina Pinot Noir Beautiful, intense and bright color, with very aromatic nose reminiscent of red fruits like cherries, as well as notes of violets and roses. On the palate it is supple, velvety and balanced, with earthy notes of forest floor and spices contributed by the elegant, well integrated oak. Its excellent structure augurs a long life — at least another 20 years, probably more.
