Get ready for our next tasting event, an exciting sampling of wines from the famed Châteauneuf-du-Pape! On Thursday, February 1 at 6 p.m., our general manager Travis Doyle will lead us through a tasting of five distinct wines from this renowned region.
Châteauneuf-du-Pape is located in the southern Rhône Valley of France. The area has a rich wine-making history dating back to the 14th century and the Popes of Avignon. The region is known for its red blends, typically composed of Grenache, Syrah, and Mourvèdre grapes (though other varietals are also permitted). Part of what makes Châteauneuf-du-Pape so special is its unique terroir, where large, rounded stones known as galets retain heat from the sun and radiate it back to the vines.
Wines from Châteauneuf-du-Pape boast a robust and complex flavor profile, characterized by bold fruit notes such as blackberry, cherry, and plum, complemented by hints of herbs, spices, and a distinctive earthiness. With a reputation for aging gracefully, these wines often exhibit a fine balance between power and elegance, making them sought after by wine enthusiasts worldwide.
